Towards criteria for sustainable process selection: On the modelling of pure subtractive versus additive/subtractive integrated manufacturing approac…

2017

Additive Manufacturing (AM) processes can be counted among the disruptive technologies that are capable of transforming conventional manufacturing routes. The ability to create complex geometries, the reduction in material scraps during manufacturing, and the light-weighting due to the think-additive redesign of the components represent the main points of strength of AM. However, for some applications (such as the production of metal components for the automotive and aerospace industries), the surface finishing and dimensional/geometrical part tolerancing that can be achieved via AM processes might not be adequate to satisfy the imposed product specifications, and finish machining operation…

Manufacturing strategies for efficiency in energy and resources use: The role of metal shaping processes

2017

Abstract Manufacturing sector nowadays has to deal with the global need to reduce the environmental impact of human activity. As manufacturing accounts for a significant portion of the global CO 2 emissions, scientific research should be addressed to understand the environmental impact of manufacturing processes and, in the meantime, to take advantage of their full potential in reducing the overall CO 2 emissions. The present review paper aims at describing the role of metal shaping processes in reducing the environmental impact across different stages of metal components life. Actually, an increased consciousness concerning both the environmental performances of manufacturing processes and…

Trends in Metal Cutting Theory and Practice

2017

This chapter provides the state-of-the-art manufacturing systems that utilize various machining technologies in different manufacturing sectors. It highlights the challenges of the 21st-century manufacturing environment and characterizes numerous driven factors in modern machining technologies. They include more-established technologies, such as High-Speed Machining/Cutting, High-Performance Machining/Cutting, High-Efficiency Machining or currently developed ones, such as resource- and energy-efficient (generally sustainable) and hybrid machining. Practical examples and charts that document their importance in modern manufacturing are provided. Finally, some important future trends are over…

Lower and Upper Bounds of Manufacturing Cost in FMS

1993

Abstract The use of traditional techniques of product costing, cost control and performance evaluation in advanced manufacturing environment supplies poor results to operations management. In this paper, after a brief review of the major drawbacks of traditional machining economics, a new framework for product costing will be presented. The basis of the proposed approach lies on an analysis of the production process aimed at single out proper cost drivers for the use of the various employed manufacturing resources. As a consequence, the quota of the manufacturing cost of uncertain allocation is drastically reduced. A lower and an upper bound value of the unit production cost are also define…

Enabling robotic adaptive behaviour capabilities for new industry 4.0 automated quality inspection paradigms

2020

The seamless integration of industrial robotic arms with server computers, sensors and actuators can revolutionise the way in which automated non-destructive testing (NDT) is performed and conceived. Achieving effective integration and realising the full potential of robotic systems presents significant challenges, since robots, sensors and end-effector tools are often not necessarily designed to be put together and form a holistic system. This paper presents recent breakthroughs, opening up new scenarios for the inspection of product quality in advanced manufacturing. Many years of research have brought to software platforms the ability to integrate external data acquisition instrumentatio…

Deformation measurement of circular steel plates using projected fringes

2013

Published version of an article in the journal: The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00170-013-5276-3 Fringe projection is a versatile method for mapping the surface topography. In this paper, it is used to measure the deformation of steel plates under static penetration. Here, the surface shape changes continuously. Therefore, it is important to minimize the registration time. To achieve this, we apply a method of fringe location with subpixel accuracy that requires only a single exposure for each registration. This is in contrast to phase shifting techniques that require at least three separate exp…

MANUFACTURING E-MARKETPLACES: INNOVATIVE TOOLS FOR THE EXTENDED ENTERPRISE

2005

This Chapter introduces the research carried out under the research program titled “Distributed process and production planning in manufacturing enterprise networks” and funded by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR) under the program PRIN2001. The research program aimed at developing an innovative concept of neutral linear e-marketplace able to support manufacturing enterprises networks in transactional, information sharing and exchange and collaborative relationship. The Chapter discusses the needs of innovative tools for supporting the new paradigm of the “extended enterprise” showing how the e-marketplace concept, when specific added value services are desig…

Issues in synthetic data generation for advanced manufacturing

2017

To have any chance of application in real world, advanced manufacturing research in data analytics needs to explore and prove itself with real-world manufacturing data. Limited access to real-world data largely contrasts with the need for data of varied types and larger quantity for research. Use of virtual data is a promising approach to make up for the lack of access. This paper explores the issues, identifies challenges, and suggests requirements and desirable features in the generation of virtual data. These issues, requirements, and features can be used by researchers to build virtual data generators and gain experience that will provide data to data scientists while avoiding known or …
